This week, CCES students will travel to Columbia for the 2023 Youth In Government conference. YIG is an annual conference sponsored by the YMCA focused on improving civic education and getting high schoolers involved in politics.

Some students have written bills and will attempt to pass them through a mock Congress in Model Legislature. Others will compete in the Mock Trial competition, the judicial side of the conference.

The majority of Christ Church students attending are in our award-winning Mock Trial program led by Mr. Diego Miranda, captain  senior Elijah Butcher, and CCES parent Mrs. Linda Whisenhunt, a local attorney. This program has more than doubled in size in the past two years.

CCES Mock Trial has won the competition the past two years. In 2021, a team of Class of 2023 girls captained by Maggie Rogers won in a revolutionary year for CCES Mock Trial. In 2022, seniors Elijah Butcher and Pera Roberts led a mixed-grade levels team to victory, receiving numerous awards despite overcoming illnesses, early departures, and the absence of Coach Whisenhunt at the competition.

This year, five CCES Mock Trial teams will face off against other schools from around the state to defend our title.

Look out for more news in the coming weeks about our performance at YIG. To learn more about YIG, contact Mr. Miranda and visit https://www.ymcagreenville.org/programs/outreach-development/sc-youth-government.
