CCES has added a new member to its language department this year: Mrs. Marielle Walker, an experienced Spanish teacher who brings over a decade of experience to the classroom.
Originally from Michigan, Mrs. Walker has lived, studied, and worked in a wide range of places, including North Carolina, Vietnam, New York City, Montana, and Spain. She earned her undergraduate degree from Western Michigan University and completed her master’s at the Universidad de Salamanca in Spain.
This is her 14th year in education. She says she was drawn to Christ Church by the strength of its language department and the opportunity to work with a variety of programs.
“I was interested in Christ Church because the language department is packed with excellent teachers, and the idea of learning new curricula—AP, IB, and teaching Spanish 1A and 1B—appealed to me,” she said.
Her interest in teaching came from a combination of enjoying her Spanish and music classes and her general love for working with people “I like people, and my favorite subjects were music and Spanish, so I decided to go into education. I’m lucky that it worked out so well!” she said.
Outside of the classroom, Mrs. Walker has a wide range of hobbies. She enjoys knitting, walking, hiking, reading, and going to the movies. Her favorite color is red. She also has a long-standing love of animals and once considered becoming a veterinarian.
During holidays, Mrs. Walker tries to spend time with family when possible, though she lives far away from them. She enjoys traveling during school breaks.
Junior Cameron Wilkie stated, “Mrs. Walker ensures we understand what is going on in class and is very open to discussion outside of class if we need help.”
