Cavalier Swim Team Experiences Early Success
The Cavalier swim team is off to an impressive start after their first three meets of the year. The team has been unshaken by Christ Church’s recent move into the AA division of the South Carolina High School League as they compete with teams from divisions A-AAAA every year. In fact, the boys team won the AAA State Championship two years ago, and both teams finished within the top ten in the state meet last year. Despite losing a couple of key seniors from last year, the Cavalier swim team has seven seniors this year: three on the boys team and four on the girls team.
The first meet of the year took place before the start of school on Saturday, August 20, at Greenville County Splashdown Meet. The meet hosted upwards of twenty A-AAAAA high school teams from across Greenville County. The Cavaliers were very impressive in the meet, especially against the stiff competition. Seniors Maddie Baker and Rak Hovart both placed in the overall top five in all of their respective individual events. The Cavs have also impressed in their first two dual swim meets. On August 25, the Cavs faced Greenville High, Daniel and Greer Middle College. On September 1, the Cavs faced Eastside, TL Hanna and Wren. The Cavalier swimmers won many individual and relay events in both of the meets.
Senior swimmer Braden Balogh says that he enjoys the comradery and friendships that he has gained from the swim team, saying that “we are a close-knit team of people who look out for each other; I’ve really enjoyed being a part of it.”
Senior Maddie Baker also enjoys the friendships and is excited about the young talent coming into the swim team from the freshmen and sophomore classes as well as the middle school. Baker said “I love swim team so much because of all the fun we have.”
Both in and out of the pool the Cavalier swim team looks forward to more success in the near future and will look to carry this success all the way into the State swim meet on October 8.
