Some of the top girls basketball teams in the county recently fell at the hands of Christ Church. The Cavaliers, who had previously been regarded as a lowly 1A team in Greenville, proved that they are capable of competing and winning against competitive 3A and 4A public schools in the Lady Sandlapper Tournament at Eastside High School from December 28th to the 30th.

The tournament consisted of many of the top girls basketball programs in the Upstate such as Greenville, Eastside, Riverside, and Greer. However, these teams were no match for the Cavaliers as the girls beat Greenville High in the semi-finals and Eastside High in the finals.

Going into the semi-finals against Greenville, Christ Church had lost their three previous games against the Red Raiders this season. However, after being up by one point at half-time, the Cavs played tremendously in the third quarter, outscoring Greenville by six points. The Cavs went on to win 66-61. Christ Church senior Shayla Bennett, a UNC commit, had 33 points.

In the finals, Christ Church faced Eastside who had the home-court advantage. However, the Cavs had outscored the Eagles by five points going into the third quarter and added to their lead in the fourth quarter, winning by a final score of 56-45. Sophomore Lawren Cook recorded a double-double for Christ Church.

The Cavs played extremely well against local powerhouses Greenville and Eastside and demanded respect that they are a true threat in the Upstate.
