Christ Church wins fourth straight football state championship.
A fourth consecutive state championship, a 54 consecutive straight win and a third consecutive undefeated season were all on the line last Friday as the Christ Church football team took on Bamberg-Ehrhardt in the Class A state championship game.
At the end of the day, the Cavaliers beat the Red Raiders 23-14, clinching their fourth straight state championship and the fifth in school history. The Cavaliers also finished the year 14-0 for the third straight year while extending their win streak to 54 games.
It was a cold night with temperatures in the mid-forties at Benedict College in Columbia. Many students were in attendance and helped create a great atmosphere on the road for the Cavaliers.
The Cavaliers had relied heavily on their pass game all year behind starting quarterback Andrew Slade, but, in this game, sophomore running back Radford Swent had a big impact. He had 25 rushes for 108 yards, not to mention his reception touchdown on the Cavaliers’ opening drive.
Christ Church must now look to the future without many important seniors including Slade. They will also look to extend their win streak next year.
