Record Breaking

The Christ Church football team sets a state record.

On Friday, August 29, in front of the largest crowd at Carson Stadium, the Cavalier football team did something no other team has done before.

Christ Church beat Abbeville 28-21 to set the football state record for the most consecutive wins. This historic victory was the Cavaliers’ 42 straight win, surpassing the previous record set by Summerville from 1978-1980. Christ Church, ranked the eighth best team in the Upstate by the Greenville News, began their win streak at the beginning of the 2011 season. During this streak, they have won three 1A state championships.

Senior quarterback Andrew Slade passed for 291 yards and all four of Christ Church’s touchdowns: three to Rudy Johnstone and one to Bobby Hudson. Slade has passed for a total of 358 yards and six touchdowns this season.

Christ Church took a 28-0 lead and held on for the win behind strong defensive play. Late in the fourth quarter, sophomore Ryan Putman made a clutch tackle on a 4th and 1 play to prevent Abbeville from advancing into scoring position.

After the game was over and the teams shook hands, Christ Church students stormed the field to celebrate with the players.

Christ Church sophomore Matthew Mahaffey attended the game and helped create the electric atmosphere. “The energy level was so high and all the players were just so relieved once the game was over.”

“I really enjoyed the game. The atmosphere of excitement and camaraderie was amazing.” Earle Oxner, a Christ Church senior, said.

The students and players gathered in the center of the field. After a group prayer, head coach Don Frost praised the efforts of his team during an emotional post-game speech.

Christ Church (2-0) beat Lee Central in Bishopville, South Carolina 42-14 in their first game of the year. The Cavaliers will travel to Eastside for their third game tonight as they hope to continue their win streak.
