Lady Cavalier Basketball
The first half of region play is over, and the Lady Cavaliers are now standing second in the region, just behind rival St. Joseph’s. These games started after the new year, and the first was played against St. Joseph’s. The girls put up a hard fight, but they fell a little short and were defeated. Their next five games with Greenville Tech Charter, Brashier Middle College Charter, Southside Christian, Greer Middle College Charter, and the South Carolina School for the Deaf and the Blind turned out to be a pretty easy win for the girls, which allowed the younger players to get some playing time.
Even though the rest of the school was on break during the holiday season, the basketball team did not take much time off. Immediately after Christmas, the girls participated in a tournament at Eastside High School where they were able to gain more experience in a game setting.
The Varsity Girl’s Basketball team spent almost a month preparing for the regular season. They played multiple scrimmages, during which the girls showed promise as they played against 3A and 4A teams. The regular season started in full swing with the girls playing six games in two weeks, all of them being non-region games. The first two were losses, but they served as great learning experiences for the girls. The Lady Cavs defeated Spartanburg Christian in their third game. In addition, after losses to Blacksburg and Travelers Rest during the previous week, the girls defeated both teams in their second meetings. In addition, they pulled out an easy victory over Ware Shoals.
The team is relatively young. There are only four upperclassmen, including captains Courtney Fant, Mary Kate Carter, and Sarah Robinson. In addition, the team has one freshman, an eighth grader, and several sophomores. Despite the youth of the team, senior Courtney Fant has high hopes for the season. “I want to win region.” As far as her leadership goes, she says, “I tend to lead more through attitudes and actions rather than words.” Freshman Bailey Breazeale had great things to say about the leadership of the team. “I like having such good players on the team to look up to. I also like the fact that they treat me as a regular player, not just a freshman.”
The Lady Cavs are hopeful that they will finish the last half of region games even stronger than the first so that they can enter playoffs with a high seed.
