Hurricane, a legendary secret service dog, passed away two weeks ago. He worked in the White House with his partner Jordan through the first 6 years of his life. Hurricane was a jet-black Belgian Malinois who was described as “fierce but affectionate”. The Belgian Malinois is a smaller, faster, more agile German Shepherd which the white house has adopted as the official guard dog of the Presidential palace. Interestingly enough, Hurricane is not supposed to have a black coat, and it is fairly uncommon for it to occur. According to a pet activist, “international kennel clubs agree that for a Belgian Malinois black fur is considered a fault”. Hurricane had his fifteen minutes of fame after Dominic Adesanya tried to jump a White House fence in 2014. Dominic jumped the fence and was immediately greeted by Jordan (who enjoyed walks around the property). Adesanya was able to keep Jordan at bay, but was overwhelmed when he saw Hurricane flying at him at speeds close to 25 miles per hour. After a brief entanglement where Hurricane and Jordan were punched and kicked repeatedly, Adesanya was taken into custody. He was taken to a local hospital as it became fairly clear who the winners of the fight were. Hurricane and Jordan were taken to a veterinarian’s office as they were checked over and later cleared with minor bruising. Adesanya spent 6 months in jail after the event for climbing onto unauthorized grounds. Hurricane retired after this event and was treated to nine years off duty. In 2022, “Hurricane was awarded the USSS Award for Merit, the DHS Award for Valor, the PDSA Order of Merit, and several other honors, including being the first dog in history to receive the Animals in War and Peace Distinguished Service Medal.” These awards came as a direct reflection of the effort and work Hurricane put in to serve his President and country. Hurricane was fond of Kong toys and lived for three years after he received his awards. He lived for 16 years and will be remembered as a very good boy.
